Senior Staff Accountant

Our client is a well-established, non-profit organization based in West Los Angeles.  They are seeking a sharp, experienced Staff Accountant to join their team!  The right candidate must possess solid GAAP knowledge, 2-3 years’ within an accounting role and advanced Excel skills.

Summary

Responsible for participating in the preparation of budgets, contracts and cost reports ensuring compliance with funding source requirements.  Ensures that all general ledger accounts are properly maintained and reported. 

Primary Duties

  • Prepares journal entries and assists the Director of Finance and Controller for month and year-end GL close, and audit; prepares analytical financial reports for managerial needs
  • Prepares bank transactions and transfers in accounting systems, along with bank reconciliations
  • Prepares general ledger entries by maintaining records and files; reconciling accounts
  • Maintains fixed assets and depreciation schedules on a monthly basis
  • Prepares and provides the monthly invoicing for OCHCA and DMH (SPC)
  • Prepares consolidated internal and external financial statements by gathering and analyzing information from the general ledger system and from departments
  • Maintains and balances an automated consolidation system by inputting data; scheduling required jobs; verifying data
  • Analyzes information and options by developing spreadsheet reports; verifying information
  • Prepares payments by accruing expenses; assigning account numbers and requesting disbursements
  • Develops and implements accounting procedures by analyzing current procedures; recommending changes
  • Provides diverse, complex, confidential administrative support and assistance to Accounting Manager
  • Participates in the development of budgets that accompany requests for proposals, contracts, and amendments
  • Prepares annual cost reports for funding sources
  • Establishes and maintains budget and contract files and supporting documentation in accordance with Agency and Contract requirements; retrieves and provides documents and files for audit purposes
  • Reviews and ensures all payroll-related remittances/invoices are complete and accurate, such as payroll taxes report, 403(b), health insurances, and 125 Plan
  • Reconciles payroll-related general ledger accounts, such as wages and fringes expenses, prepaid and accrual, including any monthly adjustments after discussions with the revenue department
  • Prepares, and files payroll-related government reports, such as payroll taxes and quarterly labor reports
  • Collaborates with the Director of Finance to develop, establish, and monitor payroll, budget and contract controls

Required Qualifications 

  • A working knowledge of GAAP, and the implementation and maintenance of related accounting and record-keeping systems
  • Strong in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, which includes, but is not limited to, pivot tables, filters, Vlookups, and macros
  • Ability to provide ad hoc reports with a clear narrative, conveying the purpose and its information in a concise manner
  • Effective oral and written communications skills - the ability to present ideas, information and viewpoints clearly both verbally and in writing
  • 10-key by touch
  • A working knowledge of payroll issues such as wage and hour laws, IRS regulations and other legal tax rules
  • The analytical skills, experience and good judgment to make accounting-related decisions
  • A commitment to team objectives and agency’s philosophies
  • Ability to adapt to changing needs by acquiring new skills and knowledge
  • Current California drivers’ license and a driving record acceptable to the Agency’s insurance carrier, if required by job duties
  • Typically, these requirements may be met by completion of the accounting and finance-related courses required for a bachelor’s degree in accounting, or equivalent, and two or more years of accounting and general ledger experience.  Prior non-profit accounting is a plus.
